Organic Nesting Herbs

Many of you know from our posts on facebook on how we add herbals to our hens wellness. 

When harvesting and pruning our herbs, there are situations to where we have to much or they don't quite make the grade for culinary and medicinal uses. This is when we have older branches or spent leaf that are not at their peak for human use.  BUT they are absolutely perfect for pet use!

We use both fresh herbs when on hand and we also stock up dried herbs that are put aside for animal and farm use.   Many of our herbs are beneficial for the animals for stress, anxiety and boredom. The herbs naturally repel pests such as ants, lice, mites and other annoying critters.

This "coopourri" is a fresh dried organic blend of neem leaf, red clover flower, catnip, peppermint, lavender flower, lavender stem, chickweed, rose petals and oregano. 

Neem is well known as a strong bug deterrent, offers minerals and immunity boosting properties.  Red Clover is wonderful for the respiratory and additionally mineral rich. Catnip and peppermint deter mice and ants. Lavender is calming and repels bugs. Chickweed is a hens favorite and is additionally antibacterial. Rose petals....Well...that's just fluff and they are pretty. LOL Oregano is a strong antiviral, deodorizer and bug repellent. This blend additionally includes whole dandelion flower, calendula and fragrant sage leaf.

Nesting herbs have been around for very long time as us farmers just throw all the clippings and trimmings in the coop. Now its a bit more trendy but with the same results with more focus on specific herbs and aromatics.

Using nesting herbs offer help with insects, deodorizes, aromatic, edible, decreases bacteria, is a layer stimulant and offers a more healthy environment.
For us humans, it allows us to feel good with being able to offer such a treat and we want to offer our girls the best treatment possible.

Using fresh dried aromatic herbs that are appropriate for the hens in their nesting boxes has most certainly encouraged egg production, calmer hens and a more pleasant nesting experience for them. Just sprinkle around the nest at the top edge. This allows them to experience the herbs at their level, while sitting on the nest. 

 Sprinkle the herbs in their favorite sand bath areas and you can add a few tablespoons as a top dressing on their food.  These herbs are hen friendly and safe for them to eat.

Store  your nesting herbs in an airtight container and refresh the coop weekly. Your herbs should smell fresh and fragrant with each use. No worries about the amounts, use as little or as much as you like. The hens naturally know what and how much to eat. Some hens will pick through it and many just enjoy it with their nesting material. You can be rest assured that these herbs have been grown organically with out added color, flavors, fragrance and are in there purest natural form.

PLEASE NOTE - Other nesting animals - rabbits, Guinea pigs and birds may benefit from this blend but please be sure to educate yourself on the appropriate amounts and if each herb is specifically safe for that particular animal. 
These herbs are NOT for human consumption as they were not handled in a sterile environment or processed accordingly. Possible sand granules from our farm could be dried on herbs.
